Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register my trailer in Victoria?
It depends on the weight and size. In Victoria, a light trailer is exempt from registration if it weighs less than 200kg (unladen), is shorter than 3 meters, is not wider than the towing vehicle, and is for private use only. However, most heavy-duty trailers (even 6x4s) often weigh over 200kg and must be registered. As a manufacturer, Meltrailer can handle the registration process for you.
What is the difference between a galvanised trailer and a painted trailer?
Galvanised trailers are rust-proof; painted trailers are not. Hot-dip galvanised trailers are submerged in molten zinc, creating a metallurgical bond that prevents rust for 50+ years, even in coastal areas. Painted trailers (often black or blue) rely on a thin layer of paint that easily chips, leading to rapid rust and a lower resale value.
What does ATM mean when buying a trailer?
ATM stands for Aggregate Trailer Mass. It is the combined maximum weight of the trailer plus its full load when unhitched from your car. For example, if a 6×4 trailer has an ATM of 750kg and weighs 250kg empty (Tare weight), you can legally carry a 500kg payload.
Why is it cheaper to buy a trailer direct from the manufacturer?
You avoid the “middleman markup.” When you buy from a dealer, you are paying for their showroom overheads and profit margin. Buying factory-direct from Meltrailer in Ravenhall means you pay for the materials and craftsmanship only, often saving hundreds of dollars while getting superior Australian build quality.
Can I tow a trailer with an electric vehicle (EV)?
Yes, but you must check your specific model’s rating. Many modern EVs (like the Tesla Model Y or Kia EV9) have towing capacities ranging from 1,000kg to 2,500kg. However, towing a box trailer will reduce your EV’s range due to wind resistance. Always check your owner’s manual before towing.
Do I need electric brakes on my trailer?
Only if the loaded weight exceeds 750kg. By Australian law, trailers with a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) under 750kg do not require brakes. Most single-axle 6×4 and 7×5 box trailers are unbraked. For heavier loads (like tandem axle trailers rated to 2000kg), mechanical or electric brakes are mandatory.
What is the best trailer size for general home use?
The 6×4 single axle is the most popular choice. It is compact, easy to reverse, and fits standard loads like green waste, mulch, and camping gear. If you need to carry building sheets (2.4m) or larger furniture, the 8×5 single axle is the “prosumer” upgrade that offers more length without the extra cost of a tandem axle.
How long will a hot-dip galvanised trailer last?
Expect a lifespan of 30 to 50+ years. The zinc coating used in hot-dip galvanisation has “self-healing” properties; if the surface is scratched, the zinc sacrifices itself to protect the steel underneath. This makes them the only logical choice for Victorian weather conditions compared to painted steel, which may rust within a few years.
Can you build a custom trailer for my business?
Yes, because we are the manufacturer. Unlike resellers who only stock standard sizes, Meltrailer can custom-build trailers to your exact specs. Whether you need a specific cage height, toolboxes, extended drawbars, or reinforced suspension for trade use, we can fabricate it in our Ravenhall factory.
Do I need a special licence to tow a trailer in Victoria?
No, a standard car licence is sufficient for towing most light trailers, provided the trailer and load do not exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity. However, you must display “L” or “P” plates on the rear of the trailer if you are a learner or probationary driver.
